Pacific Coast Hockey League
The 1912 season saw the beginning of the Pacific Coast Hockey League. This league was formed and financed by Frank and Lester Patrick. They used their family’s lumber fortune to bankroll the endeavor. In its initial season, arenas were built in Vancouver and Victoria and teams were created in New Westminster, Vancouver and Victoria. After the league was formed and the teams were organized, the Patrick’s began to raid the NHA and offer contracts to that league’s best players. They were able to draw marquee players such as Newsy Lalonde and Cyclone Taylor away from the Upper Canada based NHA. The PCHL lasted until 1924 when the Seattle Metropolitans folded and the two remaining teams joined the Western Hockey League.
