Billy Dunphy, born in North Sydney had played hockey for the North Sydney Victorias of the Cape Breton Senior Hockey league. Billy played the1912 season in the MPHA switching between the Halifax Crescents and the Halifax Socials.He was an excellent goal scorer and was considered one of the best hockey players in the Maritimes.

William Dunphy, of North Sydney, Nova Scotia, was one of the best hockey players in Canada before World War I. In 1907 William played for the North Sydney Victorias, who lost the Nova Scotia Senior Hockey Championship to the Halifax Crescents.

In 1910 Dunphy and the North Sydney Victorias lost 2-1 to the Halifax Crescents for the first Nova Scotia Professional Hockey Championship. William played on this 1910 team with other hockey greats like Frank "Stonewall" Morrison, Mike Murphy and Neil Wilkie.

In 1911 Dunphy went to play for the Halifax Crescents along with Ves Laing, Veddie Weaver and Neil Wilkie. Then in 1912 he played for the Halifax Socials with Jack Twaddle, Neil Wilkie and Ves Laing.

In 1913 William switched teams again and went to play for the Sydney Millionaires. This team played the Quebec Bulldogs for the Stanley Cup on March 8 and 10, 1913 and Sydney lost both games by scores of 14-3 and 6-2, respectively.

In 1914 he played with the Sydney Millionaires again and they were the league champions that year.
