Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame Bio:

Lester Lowther was a native of Amherst, Nova Scotia. He was among the top hockey players in the Maritimes, and the first Nova Scotian to play in the NHL. During the early 1900's, Lowther was the top performer with the Amherst Ramblers. He turned pro in 1913 with the Halifax Socials.

A brilliant left-winger, he possessed great speed and checking ability that caught the eye of the Toronto St. Pats. Lowther was called to play for the team in 1914 where he demonstrated his outstanding talents for the twelve games he played for them.

If not for the outbreak of World War I, he would have enjoyed a long career in the NHL. He went on to join the ranks of Canadians going to serve their country.

After the war, Leo continued to contribute to the game of hockey as a coach and referee in the top Maritime leagues like the big Four League. In 1934, he coached the Amherst Canucks to their first Maritime Junior title. Lester Lowther passed away on February 21, 1974, at the age of 81. He is an Original Sport Hall of Fame Inductee.
